Note: There are no exact dates, only estimations, as I never documented this information.
I was introduced to video games by my father as soon as I was old enough to hold a controller and understand that pressing buttons and moving the analogue stick made something happen onscreen. My earliest gaming memories are of my father’s PS1 and PC. We didn’t have a Nintendo console at the time. I don’t remember most of the games either. But I do remember playing a lot of racing and point-and-click adventure games. The highlight of this era in my gaming journey was ‘Carmen Sandiego’s Great Chase Through Time‘ – which is still an old favorite of mine. This era of my gaming journey solidified me as a gamer for the rest of my life. It’s a hobby I will never not engage in to at least some degree.
Eventually, I moved on to my father’s PS2 when the console released, on which I spent the most time of any one console. I played on this – and a little bit my father’s PC – for all of my gaming for at least a five year period, as far as I can remember. We didn’t have a GameCube. The highlight from this time in my gaming journey was ‘‘ (my current tenth favorite game) after I eventually bought my own used PS2 around 2006.
The next major console I played (while still playing my PS2 and my father’s PC) was the Wii, when my family bought one. It was my first Nintendo console. I enjoyed the Wii overall, lacking in great games as it was. The highlight of this time in my gaming journey was ‘The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess‘, one of my favorite games.
After several years of the price lowering, I was able to obtain a used Xbox 360 and PS3, around 2009 or so. I played these consoles almost as much as the PS2, but not quite, as my time was split between the two. I bought both for the sake of console exclusives. I played these two consoles for years. My gaming highlight from this time in my gaming journey was the original ‘The Last of Us‘.
Eventually, in early 2016, as a gift for finishing my first associates degree, my father gave me $500 to build a gaming PC. It wasn’t great, but was far more powerful than the 360 and PS3, so I was happy. I played exclusively on this PC until late 2017, when I finally bought a PS4 due to the great exclusive games for it that I wanted to play and the fact that the price had dropped extensively. My highlight of this time in my gaming journey was ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘, which I played on my PC after numerous recommendations. This was a great decision, as it turned out to be the best game I have played, even till this day.
And that brings us to 2018-ish up until today. Around a year ago, I bought a Nintendo Switch, a New 3DS XL; and more recently have bought and further upgraded an entirely new gaming PC. Starting from a low tier modern gaming PC, I now have this setup: Windows 10, a 250GB SSD, a 6-core, 12-thread 3.6 GHz AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, a 6GB ‘GeForce GTX 1080 OC’ and 32GB of dual-channel, 3200 MHz DDR4 ram. The gaming highlight from this current era of my gaming journey (so far), funnily enough, is still from the PS4, as ‘Persona 5 Royal‘ turned out really, really good.
Now, I wait for Cyberpunk 2077 to release (the PC version of course) while looking for work using my newly acquired masters degree and playing games from my backlog, with the occasional new game every so often.
